Red Velvet Hot Chocolate

Happy Valentine's Day!  My husband and I don't make a big deal of Valentine's Day.  With all the other holidays we have to buy presents for - including the three additional holidays that accompany marriage and parenthood - we've prioritized this one as very, very low.  It does, however, give me an excuse to make him a sweet treat ;)  This year I made red velvet hot chocolate!

Ingredients:  milk, half and half, bittersweet chocolate, milk chocolate, sugar, vanilla, instant espresso powder and red food coloring.

Heat the milk and half and half until almost simmering.

Remove it from the heat and add the chocolate.  Let it sit for a few minutes.

Add the rest of the ingredients to the pot and a few drops of the food coloring.  The espresso powder just brings out the flavor of the chocolate and adds a touch more caffeine.  You won't actually be able to taste it.

Whisk it for a minute or so until it is all combined.  Add more food coloring if needed.  Reheat it over the stove on low heat.

Top with whipped cream and enjoy!  This is silky, velvety, luxurious...sinful!  If you have never had real hot chocolate before I can promise you - once you try it you will never go back to the powdered stuff.  You can also spike it with peppermint schnapps or Bailey's.  YUMMM!  Happy Valentine's Day!!

Note:  I just added red food coloring to my favorite hot chocolate recipe to make it "red velvet."
